Amazing Startup Journey | Work at Connect

My experience working for Connect over the four-week internship has been nothing short of amazing.

I am so grateful to have made international connections and have expanded my network.

Here are 5 things that I learned

1. Working virtually.

As many have experienced this year, working in the virtual environment took some time adjusting to. Whilst video calls helped, I felt it was ever most important to have clear communication and goal setting to make up for the missing face to face interactions that everyone is used to. Whilst it can feel isolating working alone, working virtually has made me appreciate the small details when working apart of a team and I certainly did enjoy the greater flexibility between work and leisure.

2. Dealing with time-zones.

Due to the 2hr time difference, meetings were either very early for my Singapore colleagues or very late for myself. Nevertheless, it's all about compromise and everyone's happy to accommodate each other.

3. Creativity.

Never in my life have I had so many brainstorming sessions prior to working at Connect. Given that this was a startup company, there were many different avenues of opportunities to explore. This of course involved brainstorming ideas, events and planning them. It certainly brought out the creative side from me and developed a whole new skill-set that will no doubt be useful in my future career endeavors.

4. Multiple Apps.

There is literally an app for everything nowadays. I definitely felt like a fish out of water during the beginning stages as I was learning the functions and shortcuts in each app. Plus, most of them I've never even heard of. But with time and lots of practice, I got the hang of it and can't imagine doing it any other way.

5. Effective planning and Time management.

Given the isolation in working, it was easy to fall into the temptation of watching Netflix or browsing the web. Although sometimes it can actually be helpful to find that creative spark! Nevertheless, I made a conscious effort to set up daily goals and allocate non-distracting times during my workdays. Thus I would have several hours of solely working and completing a task, and get to have some guilt-free leisure time.

working virtually has made me appreciate the small details when working apart of a team and I certainly did enjoy the greater flexibility between work and leisure.
